BBC RADIO 2

The BBC Radio 2 schedule mini-shakeup begins today.
Most notable, to folk here, on how it affects the specialist music programbing.
The specialist shows move from 7 to 8PM with the Blues Show (Monday) seeing a new presenter CERYS MATHEWS. Re-titled the CERYS MATHEWS BLUES SHOW Cerys replaces blues veteran Paul Jones. Cerys made her name in rock music & her first show sees her joined by Tom Jones to talk about their "shared love of the blues". Sure one of tom Jones' primary influences was Blues & RnB, but this looks like Radio 2 are seeking to "mainstream" the show, making it more "accesable" to a mainstream audience. I think it loses something in the process.
JAMIE CULLUM (TUE) continues his similar aproach to jazz while Mark Radcliffe reasuringly maintains his spot as THE FOLK SHOW (WED) presenter, & of course BOB HARRIS COUNTRY (THU) continues his unasailable role in country music.
A new show, Monday to Thursday, is a late night show Radio 2 has tried & abandoned in the past. SARA COX (10PM-12:00) hosts the show. I would hope the show will be music dominated, but the promo I heard talks about a "natter". I like Sara Cox as a presenter, but if I want talk on the radio at bedtime I would rather turn on the news. I'll give it a go, though!
