Oot'n'Pik (aka CMP's Chris Smith): Received a bunch of albums to review for CMP - first impressions are good - think I'll start with Asleep at the Wheel which seems to be a diamond.
Expect to see a glowing 5 STAR review

It's OK. I seem to come away from Asleep at the Wheel recently feeling slightly disappointed: when I saw them last year in Wichita Falls I felt their performances were a bit ho-hum and work-a-day. And now a new album ... it's well played and the featured female vocalist is great but it's not really what I want to hear from them! Ray Benson has obviously wanted to do something different and try some different styles, like he did on his solo album a few years back. Personally I'd have been happy with recording 12 old western swing songs like they did with Willie Nelson in "Willie & The Wheel". "Dublin Blues" is good and the almost Parisian sounding "I Am Blue" stands out. Wonder if this will be one that grows on me?

New single from Dale Watson, "Elvis Was A Love Affair/You'll Cry Too", available to download and as a 7" single. Both pretty somber tracks. Not really sure what this relates to, can't see anything about a new album. It's up on Spotify.

Aaron Watson - Live At The World's Biggest Rodeo Show Live
Very American vibes from the former NRA Artist of the Month
'Live at the World’s Biggest Rodeo Show', the “pioneering independent’s” (Cowboys & Indians) 14th album and his first live album in nearly a decade, marking the one year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey’s landfall on the south Texas coast (August 25, 2017).

I can very much recommend this new release from honky tonk piano man Damian O'Grady. He's backed Amber Digby, Miss Lesley, and Wanda Jackson to name just a few. Great stuff - and it's up on Spotify!

Also coming soon ... the third release by JP Harris and the Tough Choices. The tracks I've heard so far as good as previous releases but that cover ... ???

Yeah, I'm looking forward to this one. He's back in the UK later in the year too.

Definitely one for downloading instead of having a CD to look at...........

86 year old Loretta Lynn's new album "Wouldn't it be great" is out next week. Some old stuff, some new - it's a very enjoyable listen.

I notice this one showed up in CMP in the September issue getting 4 STARS from Duncan Warwick. Is that how you found it?
With such poor music sales these days not that many show up on either UK or US Country iTunes Top 200 and it requires hardly any sales to achieve that.
I wonder if such albums were not submitted to CMP they would know they even exist.
Do you trawl through CD Baby new releases in the hope of spotting them or follow traditional country releases another way?

New Music for Grandad's

It's enough to make The Shires sounded like a traditional country & western outfit. Appalling stuff and really bad POP

Funnily enough, the O'Grady CD DID come to me as a recommendation from CD Baby! I don't always see CMP anymore, it just depends if I remember to have a flick through it if I'm in Smiths.

I saw this one mentioned on Facebook ... it's her second album, featuring a mix of swing, jazz, honky tonk, and even some Hawaiaan sounding stuff! It's nothing earth shattering but jogs along quite nicely.

So good variety and honky-tonk tracks.

Hey Kev, I agree.
The honky-tonk fuelled tracks are particularly appealing.
Did you cherry pick tracks as downloads or just stream the one's you liked?

Cheryl Deseree was thrilled with the 5 STARS and published the review on Twitter which CMP then shared

BTW, Thanks for reviving my interest in CD Baby.
I used that website and bought tons from it 10 years back. Then when broadband kicked in drifted across to iTunes and bought tracks rather than buying full albums. I expect streaming of music is at 80% of sales. It was around 63% last year and has dramatically increased.
CMP told me this week "Record companies no longer have teams of telesales people calling record stores to presell their products. Who's going to pre-order something on iTunes in this day and age unless they're some obsessive fanboy/girl. Isn't nearly all music available globally now? Maybe better to buy directly from an artist rather than use iTunes"?
The trouble is I constantly find the shipping costs to the UK is prohibitive and makes buying a CD far too expensive (can often be over $30). The artist usually only makes the physical product available from their website or else direct you to iTunes instead for digital.

Yes, mailing costs to the UK is shocking now. It didn't seem so bad when we were getting nearly $2 to the ££ but now it makes me think twice! There are ways round it though - if you're buying direct from an artist, ask them to quote you a mail cost for just the CD and paper inserts (ie, no plastic case). It cuts the cost dramatically. I was recently trying to get a CD from a chap in Canada: the price quoted for US and Canada ($15) included mailing but he was going to charge me 10 Canadian dollars extra. I asked him to quote me without the box and the price came in just a few cents more than posting inland with the box. It pays to ask! And if the artist can't do that, I get it delivered to a friend for the inclusive price and they ping it over to me!

Three good songs from the Pistol Annies upcoming album "Interstate Gospel" are on Spotify and Youtube. Really looking forward to hearing the rest of them!
